Final Posting - Spring 2013

In class, we have been discussing thermodynamics and reaction rates.  I want you to research how these topics are used industry, agriculture, or in the treatment of contaminated soil, waste, or water.

The following are some questions to guide your research and should be answered in your post:  What type of reaction is taking place?  Is the reaction endothermic or exothermic?  What kind of enthalpy change takes place?  What is the purpose of the study, research, etc.?  Describe the rate of the reaction.  Do they use anything to speed up or slow down the reaction being used.  How is the research interesting to you?

The post is due by next Thursday, May 23rd @ Midnight.  We will discuss the next day in class.  If you have any questions, please let me know.
Good Luck!

Stoichiometry Winter 2013

In class, we have been studying the unit of stoichiometry.  Stoichiometry is a practical application and is used is many circumstances.  Those circumstances range from baking to rocket fuels to putting air in your tire.  For this post, you will research how stoichiometry is used in an application that is interesting to you.  Provide a summary of the experiment, project, or application in which stoichiometry is used.  Also, include other information to help explain how stoichiometry is applied to your post.

Remember to use complete sentences and the post should be roughly a paragraph in length.

This post is due by midnight on Monday, March 11th.  We will discuss posts in class on Tuesday, March 12th.  Remember it will be worth a 20 point quiz grade.  The rubric is available on edline.

If you have any questions, please let me know.  Have Fun!

Atomic Theory Fall 2012

For the last few chapters in our text, we have been studying atomic theory and structure and how it has evolved with the development of new technology and different ideas.

For this post, I want you to investigate how the study of atomic theory and structure has been applied to different areas of research or careers.  How can the study of something so small be applied to many different areas of research or careers?  In your investigation answer the following questions:  How does atomic theory or structure relate to this research or career?  Does the research or career look at an atom, parts of an atom, or several atoms?  If it is a career (profession), why is this job important?  What is the purpose of the research or career?  How is the research or career interesting to you?

The post is due by Monday, October 15 @ Midnight.  Do not wait until the last minute to post.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Have Fun!

Fall 2012 First Posting

Again, welcome to Coach Funt's chemistry blog.  First, we need to setup a google account so that you can post on the blog.  Once your account is setup, you can visit Coach Funt's Chemistry blog.  The blog postings from last year are available, and you can look at those if you like.

For this posting, you are going to research a substance or mixture and analyze how scientists are using the substance or mixture.  Pick a substance/mixture that you are interested in researching.  Many substances/mixtures are used in food, cosmetics, hunting and fishing needs, medicine, etc.  Answer these questions:  What is the substance or mixture?  What is its chemical formula?  How is the substance or mixture used?  Why is it used compared to a different substance/mixture?  What physical and chemical properties does the substance/mixture exhibit?  What physical and chemical changes can the substance/mixture go through?

The posting is due by Sunday, September 16th @ Midnight.  Next Monday, we will share our postings in class.  On edline, the rubric for the blog postings is available under the "contents".  The blog will count as a quiz grade.

If you have any questions, please let me know.  Have Fun!
